What is Remote Online Notarization (RON)?+
RON allows a notary public to notarize documents over a live, secure audio-video call rather than in person. The signer uses the camera on their computer or phone to appear before the notary, complete identity verification, and execute documents — all without being in the same room.
Is RON legally valid?+
Yes. New York and the majority of U.S. states have enacted RON statutes, and major lenders, GSEs and title underwriters accept RON-executed documents. ESS only uses platform providers that are authorized in the applicable state and accepted by the relevant underwriter.
What technology do I need?+
A device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet or computer) and a reliable internet connection are all that's required. No software installation is necessary — the session runs through a browser-based platform.
Can I still use a web closing if my lender requires in-person notarization?+
For transactions where a lender or state requires wet-ink notarization, ESS offers hybrid closings — documents that can be e-signed remotely and those requiring notarization handled by a mobile notary at your location. Ask your coordinator which approach fits your file.
How long does a web closing take?+
Most web closings take 30–60 minutes from the time the session begins. Identity verification typically adds 5–10 minutes if you haven't completed it in advance.
Are web closings available on weekends or evenings?+
ESS coordinates with our RON platform partners to offer extended availability. Evening and weekend sessions can be arranged — contact your closing coordinator to schedule.
